NC Institute for Public Health Program Wins Service Award
The North Carolina Institute for Public Health's Management Academy for Public Health (MAPH) garnered one of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's top organizational awards for public service on April 8, 2004.
The Office of the Provost Public Service Award was established in 2000 to recognize extraordinary public service.
The award recognizes the Management Academy for its training of community-based public health teams, and for the over 150 community health projects produced by Management Academy graduates. The Management Academy program was the first of what are now several collaborative programs between the Institute for Public Health and the Kenan-Flagler Business School.
Since its inception in 1999, the Management Academy has enrolled nearly 800 managers for its nine-month training program, from as far away as California. The curriculum promotes individual career development but also requires teams and partnerships to address health priorities in the participants' home communities through a community health business plan.
Tracking by the Lewin Group Inc. in 2003 suggests that over six million dollars went to public health business plans and other projects attributable to Management Academy.
"Teams have taken the management skills they learn here and applied them in the workplace," said Steve Orton, program manager of the Management Academy for Public Health. "We've got organizations translating training into real projects that get funded and generate revenue; that's the public service impact."
The Carolina Center for Public Service says that award winners exemplify the concept of engagement, including responsiveness to community concerns and strong community partnerships.
"Partnership is a fundamental value in our program, and the partnership between the School of Public Health and the Kenan-Flagler Business School has been an absolutely essential component in our success," added Orton.
The Office of the Provost Public Service Award, presented in a ceremony April 8 at the Carolina Club, includes a monetary award of $1,000.
