Elliot M. Silverstein is the director of Psychological Services at Dorothea Dix Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina, one of the four state hospitals in North Carolina.

Elliot graduated summa cum laude from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1969, with a major in Accounting. He received a JD from Harvard Law School in 1973, and a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1977. In 1987, he received a Diplomate in Forensic Psychology, American Board of Professional Psychology.

After graduating from UNC, Elliot worked in the Adolescent Unit at Dorothea Dix hospital. In 1979, he became Director of Psychological Services for this unit. In 1983, he became the co-director of Psychological Services and legal consultant for the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. While co-director, he also performed psychological testing and individual psychotherapy with children in the outpatient clinic. In addition, he supervised a number of trainees in various disciplines, including social work, psychiatry and psychology.

Since assuming the role of director of Psychological Services, Elliot has been more involved the administration of the Hospital, and has served as President of Medical/Psychological staff. He has been active in lecturing and teaching at UNC Medical School, including a yearly seminar on the Rorschach Ink Blot Test. In 1994, Elliot received the Herman Lineberger Award for Excellence in Supervision from the Department of Psychiatry in UNC Medical School Department.

While a graduate student, Elliot taught a course in Interviewing, Client Counseling, and Negotiations with UNC Law Professor Walker Blakey. Since 1985, he has regularly taught this course with Professor Blakey. In 1987, Elliot joined Professor Blakey in conducting negotiation workshops for the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA). In recent years, Elliot has been the associate director of the NITA negotiation workshops conducted at UNC.

Since 1996, Elliot has co-taught a negotiation course with Professor Robert Adler in the Executive MBA Program at the Kenan-Flagler Business School at UNC. He and Professor Adler have also conducted various Executive Education Programs for business executives at UNC, and have consulted for and trained various corporations and legal departments.
