Dr. Cummings received an undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Washington University, a master's degree in Health Administration from the Health Administration Program of the Washington University School of Medicine, and a doctorate in Health Policy and Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Prior to receiving her doctorate, Dr. Cummings worked for several hospitals including Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Children's Hospital, and St. Louis Regional Hospital, in St. Louis, Missouri, as well as Columbia Hospital for Women in Washington, D.C. She has experience teaching a variety of courses including Payment & Reimbursement, Health Care Finance, Health Care Accounting, and Managerial Accounting. Her research efforts are focused on improving access to care for vulnerable and minority populations.

Dr. Cummings is an active tennis player and also enjoys reading horror novels. She is married to Donald Lawrence and they have two daughters, Nina Marie and Madison Elise.
